 Mr. Afifi has been extensively involved in Environmental and conservation management and planning for the last 20 years. He started his environmental career as an environmental researcher at the Southern Sinai Protected Areas Sector and attained the position of Acting General Manager of the Red Sea Protectorates sector. He holds B.Sc in Geology and Geophysics from Ain Shams University, Cairo, Egypt in 1989. He later acquired M.Sc in Oceanography/Coastal Zone Management from Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Florida, USA in 2001. His areas of expertise and interest include marine and coastal environments, marine biodiversity conservation, Integrated/coastal zone management, tropical marine ecosystem management, environmental impact assessment, strategic environmental assessment, and MPA’s management. He has a strong background in GIS and Remote Sensing; and is a certified PADI Advanced Open Water Diver, and U/W PADI Photographer Diver. He contributed to the declaration of three protected areas in Egypt: Wadi El Gemal National Park, the Northern Red Sea Islands Protected Area, and Sallum Marine Protected Area. He also has managed many donor and international projects. In the last 5 years he managed multimillion projects in Qatar including marine and coastal environment management.
