Scatec planned to develop a 1 GW solar energy project with Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in Nagaa Hammadi, supplying the national grid and partially serving an existing aluminum plant via a power wheeling agreement. The project located on vacant desert land south of Nagaa Hammadi.
Environics was commissioned to prepare the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) in line with Egyptian regulations (Law 4/1994) and International Financial Institutions’ (IFIs) requirements, despite a tight schedule.
The ESIA:
- Integrated scoping activities to identify material environmental and social issues.
- Assessed potential E&S impacts, including cumulative effects and impacts of associated facilities (substation and power lines).
- Conducted a public disclosure meeting at the draft ESIA stage.
- Provided technical support during EEAA and lenders’ review.
The study aims to ensure the project is environmentally sound, sustainable, and compliant with both national and international standards, securing approvals from EEAA and lenders.
