Policy Paper on Wind Power in Egypt

The International Institute for Sustainable Development (IISD) has been running a major Trade Investment and Climate Change  Project since 1999. One of the focus areas is investment, which includes a case study on the historic and possible future development of wind power in Egypt. IISD assigned Environics to develop a case study on Wind Power in Egypt, to demonstrate the issues encouraging significant clean energy investment within developing countries that are net exporters of fossil fuels.

IISD assigned the experts at Environics to prepare a case study on Wind Power in Egypt to demonstrate the issues encouraging significant clean energy investment within developing countries that are net exporters of fossil fuels. The study entitled “Clean Energy Investment in Developing Countries: Wind Power in Egypt” was published in 2009 (http://www.iisd.org/pdf/2009/bali_2_copenhagen_egypt_wind.pdf)

The scope of the study included the following:
• A description of the development of wind generation to date, within the context of the development of the energy and electricity sectors;
• An analysis of factors supporting and constraining investment—what these have been to date and how they might develop in the future; and
• A discussion of the conditions that would be necessary for a large-scale implementation of wind power in the future.

This case study addressed the following topics:
– Overview of energy status in Egypt
– The potential of wind power
– Development of wind potential to date
– Plans for future development of wind
– The economics of wind power in Egypt
– Necessary conditions for large-scale implementation of wind in Egypt

Finally, the case study provided recommendations and identified further work needed to be carried out for moving forward with implementation of large-scale wind power in the future.
