HAZOP for Galaxy Chemicals Attaqa Plant

  • Galaxy Chemicals Egypt Company, owned by Galaxy Surfactants Ltd, India, was established in 2009 for the production of surfactants and chemicals used in the personal care industry.
  • The company commissioned Environics to carry out a Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) study for its established facility located in the Public Free Zone of Suez, Attaqa.
  • Environics carried out the study in accordance with the guidelines of the Centre for Chemical Process Safety (CCPS) and the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AlChE), with the objective of systematically checking and investigating the design of the facility to identify any potential hazard and operability problems that could arise particularly through deviations from the design intent.
  • Environics team studied the facility depending on the Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&IDs), and then a HAZOP analysis was carried out through a 3-days workshop attended by Galaxy specialized team.
  • The HAZOP workshop discussed the approach, scope, and key words, as well as inputs, outputs, all process lines, equipment, systems, and subsystems included in the project facilities.  The workshop also included identification and agreement on the corrective actions necessary to prevent/ minimize the consequences.
  • Environics prepared the HAZOP report which encompassed the following:
    • Introduction including; scope and methodology, documents on which the HAZOP analysis is based, team members and their affiliations, qualifications & responsibilities concerning HAZOP.
    • System definition & delimitation.
    • List of the used guide-words & parameters.
    • HAZOP results & necessary corrective actions.
    • Summary of main findings & recommendations.
    • Annexes, including; HAZOP worksheets & P&ID.

HAZOP for DMLA Tank within the Attaqa Plant

  • Galaxy Chemicals Egypt Company was planning to install a new  Di-methyl Amino Propyl Amine (DMLA) tank within its Attaqa facility.
  • As DMLA can lead to severe injuries upon direct contact, the company commissioned Environics to conduct a Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) study on the new DMLA tank to be installed.
  • The objective of HAZOP was to systematically check and investigate the design of the DMLA tank and its accessories in order to identify any potential hazard and operability problems which could arise particularly through deviations from the design intent.
  • Environics team studied the targeted tank depending on the Piping & Instrumentation Diagram (P&IDs), and then a HAZOP analysis was carried out through a workshop attended by Galaxy specialized team.
  • The HAZOP workshop discussed the approach, scope, and key words, as well as inputs, outputs, and storage conditions of the tank & its accessories.  It also included identification & agreement on the corrective actions necessary to prevent/minimize consequences.
  • Environics prepared the HAZOP report which encompassed the following:
    • Introduction including; scope and methodology, documents on which HAZOP analysis is based, team members, their affiliations, qualifications & responsibilities concerning HAZOP.
    • System definition and delimitation.
    • List of the used guide-words and parameters.
    • HAZOP results & necessary corrective actions.
    • Summary of main findings & recommendations.
    • Annexes, including; HAZOP worksheets & P&ID.
