Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment of Wind Development in West Sohag and West Aswan – The project is ongoing

Egypt is aiming to lead in green energy with its Integrated Sustainable Energy Strategy (ISES) 2035, targeting 42% of electricity from renewable sources by 2035. The Egyptian New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) oversees renewable projects, with large-scale wind concessions in West Aswan and West Sohag covering significant areas. Egypt has signed 23 MoUs with developers for wind projects expected to generate around 100 GW, supporting green hydrogen production and contributing to the national grid. To ensure environmental and social compliance, NREA is preparing a Strategic Environmental and Social Assessment (SESA) for these developments.

The SESA aims to assess the potential environmental and social impacts of proposed wind energy developments in Egypt’s West Aswan and West Sohag concession areas. It focuses on identifying impacts on the environment, local communities, and economies while recommending mitigation strategies. The Inception Report introduces the study, summarizes initial findings from a field visit, and outlines roles and responsibilities of stakeholders, including NREA and the Consultant. It also details applicable environmental and social standards for the projects, particularly those involving international financing. This Report serves as a foundational document to guide the SESA process and inform land and investment decisions.
