- Chemonics Egypt commissioned Environics to prepare an Environmental Impact Assessment study for the closure and decommissioning of El Wafaa Wal Amal landfill, located in Nasr City area, Cairo, that included: initial closure, establishment of filtration systems for leachate collection and treatment, collection of gases generated by organic waste degradation, and the landfill final closure, followed by creating a garden and opening it to visitors.
- The scope of work included: review of researches, reports, and previous studies on the physical, biological and sociological environment in the project area, field visits to the project site and surrounding area, using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in analyzing and assessing the data and preparing illustrative maps, as well as assessing the potential environmental and social impacts. The positive impacts were presented, the negative impacts, during the construction and operations phases, were analyzed, and the relevant mitigation measures were recommended.
- The study provided: a background on the project, the study framework and objectives, the legal and administrative framework regulating the project, description of the project (its location, components, construction & operation phases, proposed timeframe for implementation, etc.), as well as description of baseline conditions in the project site and surrounding area. Moreover, the study presented the consultation with the different parties and stakeholders to ensure their engagement in the different phases of project design, as well as project’s proposed alternatives, potential environmental impacts and recommended mitigation measures, and the framework for the Environmental Management and Monitoring Plan.
