Environmental & Social Review for two companies specialized in radiological and lab testing services

Environmental Resources Management (ERM) and Environics were commissioned to carry out Environmental and Social reviews for two companies specialized in radiological and lab testing services.

Both of the companies have been the focus of two separate due diligence assessments: Environmental, Social and related Governance (ESG).

The scope of work of one of the company’s Environmental and Social review was carried out in compliance with the following framework items:

  • IFC Performance Standards 1 through 8 (2012) and relevant WB/IFC Environmental Health and Safety Guidelines: and
  • ILO Core Conventions, all other ILO Conventions ratified by Egypt, Jordan, and/or Saudi Arabia and the Basic Terms and Conditions of Employment.

The review encompassed:

  • A desktop review.
  • High overview on the management of radioactive materials and waste in line with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Safety Standards (EHS Guidelines reference).
  • Assessment of particular requirements in line with the comments already received on the previous due diligence report.
  • Review of the environmental and social standards criteria/requirements.
  • Site visits including detailed description of the target company: (facilities visited, employees interviewed and activities undertaken, etc.)
  • Environmental and Social Risk assessment and ranking.
  • Limitations & Finding results were provided.
  • The Environmental and Social Action Plan was developed.

The second company’s Environmental and Social review was carried out to follow on and expand on the earlier due diligence findings against international lender standards. It included:

  • A follow up desktop based due diligence of the company according to ILO core conventions and basic Terms & Conditions of Employment.
  • High overview on the management of radioactive materials and waste in line with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Safety Standards (EHS Guidelines reference).
  • Site visits including detailed description of the target company: (facilities visited, employees interviewed and activities undertaken, etc.)
  • Results of the Environmental and Social Review were provided.
  • An updated ESAP based on the findings of the review was drafted.
