Scoped EIA study for brine discharge of desalination plant in Aqua Marina Resort, Safaga, Red Sea

  • Environics was commissioned to prepare a scoped study focusing on assessing the Environmental Impacts for constructing and operating a brine pipeline in Aqua Marina Resort, in the Red Sea, extending from the desalination plant site, passing through the beach area and the intertidal zone, into the deep water.
  • Environics conducted a field visit and a limited marine survey to the proposed discharging area opposite to Aqua Marina Resort.  After conducting the marine survey, a 3-D mathematical modeling was carried out to simulate several alternatives for brine dispersion from the proposed pipeline.  In addition, relevant researches and publications were reviewed, and satellite images were used to prepare illustrative maps.
  • The scoped study was prepared including: a description of project components and proposed works, the environmental policies, laws and legislations relevant to the project, as well as  characteristics of the natural environment in the project’s area including: climate, marine characteristics, marine biology, in addition to the socio-economic characteristics.
  • Moreover, the study analyzed the alternatives and reasons behind the selected one, identified and assessed the potential environmental impacts and the relevant mitigation measures, and developed the Environmental Management and Monitoring Plan to guarantee sustainability of the project.
